VLC Media Player is a convincing alternative to Windows Media Player and many other programs. One of the special features of this player is that it does not require the installation of additional codecs to function properly.
VLC Media Player is able to play the latest and advanced audio and video formats in a completely autonomous way with a much better rendering, thanks to post-processing on the image and the sound of higher quality.
VLC is able to read Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, Mpeg-4, MKV, DivX, AAC, MP3, OGG, AVI, WMV, MKV, MOV, and many more formats. But the player’s functions are not limited to the simple playback of multimedia files, since VLC can be used to play DVD Video, VCD, SVCD, and some streaming videos files.
It was initially the client for the VideoLAN project, which was aimed at creating software allowing the diffusion of videos through a computer network. It was originally developed by the students of the Ecole Centrale Paris and was broadcast for the first time on 1st February 2001 under the GNU GPL license.
